Suraj Gurung’s story

Growing up in a tropical country, I was always outdoors, active and involved in sports especially soccer. However, when I moved to Calgary, I found myself “hibernating” due to the long wintry months. While I was in university studying to be a Chemical Engineer, I was caught in a vicious cycle (school work piled up, and so did my weight and cholesterol level). I still played soccer during summer but preferred taking roles that required less movement (i.e. goalkeeper, coach). It wasn’t until I tipped almost 220lbs on the scale that I decided to do something about it.

I started with P90x as I was intimidated stepping into the gym. I didn’t see much progress and got bored very quickly. One day, I just decided to step foot on the gym. For weeks, I was lost but I kept telling myself “I am here, just do it”. It wasn’t until I saw the smallest of peak in my biceps that I knew was hooked. My body started changing a lot and I knew I was doing something right when people asked me about lifting advice. My gym time slowly consisted of giving strangers advice. As much as I love helping people, I couldn’t continue with giving them uneducated advice aka “bro-science”. I got myself certified as a Personal Trainer while I was in university. I realized how much I love to help people and the impact I could have on increasing the quality of the lives of others while I was volunteering at a brain-injured rehabilitation/therapy clinic. I decided to do a complete change in my career.

I think the most important thing I learn from my journey is as the saying goes “the comfort zone is a beautiful place to be in, but nothing grows there”. By just deciding to step foot in the gym that day, I have grown in confidence and I find that I can trust myself more. The biggest mistake you can do is to compare yourself to others. Everyone is on their own journey, trust yourself and do your best.

Daniel La-Lac's story

Everyone has a starting point in their fitness journey. Mine started with appreciation and participation in sports and athletics in childhood. As a young adult, finally stepping into the gym helped me open up a new world of possibilities which included training for better body composition, athletic performance, and overall improved health.

Through my education and coaching, I developed an appreciation for assessing movement as well as the unique demands of specific sports. The success of the athletes I worked with was what I strived for. I felt a sense of purpose towards blending the art of coaching with the science of movement, so I made the decision to make a career out of my passion for helping others perform better.

Working in the fitness industry for the past 7 years has allowed me to work with individuals across the lifespan in improving their quality of life. I have worked with individuals to achieve their goals, which have ranged from managing chronic pain, overcoming injuries, and achieving superior performance in their training. Human movement is complex and requires both an understanding of the science behind movement as well as the communication to coach effectively. Through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), I am currently an aspiring Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

My approach has always been to keep programs personalized and catered to each person. At Metric Fitness, I aim to create a relationship with every client I work with through trust and transparency so that you will succeed in your fitness goals - whatever that may be. Take the first step towards achieving your goals!
